Where does Rooibos tea come from?

 

Rooibos tea is not made from the same plant as that produces the green, white and black tea, but from a completely different plant, namely Aspalathus linearis. This plant needs a completely different climate than the traditional tea plants. Rooibos tea does not grow in China or Japan, but comes from South Africa!!

 

The Cederberg region is just a two-hour drive from Cape Town in South Africa. The landscape here is wild and warm with a raw, dramatic beauty. Farmland is limited by altitude, arid climate and rocky terrain, but is the perfect soil for the plant that makes Rooibos tea. The tea fields are also just green. The plant does not have green leaves, but green 'needles'.

 

As a tourist you can also stay in the Cederberg region. The towering mountains of Clanwilliam and Citrusdal with brilliant purple and orange sunsets, laden with the scent of orange blossom in spring. On the other side of the region, the beaches of Lamberts Bay and Elands Bay have some of the best waves and you'll find open-air restaurants serving only freshly caught seafood. In Wupperthal and Elandskloof, both missionary villages nestled in the beautiful mountain ranges, have a wealth of history to be discovered.
