Can you drink tea if you are pregnant or breastfeeding?
To put your mind at ease right away, yes you can! The Dutch Nutrition Center advises not to consume more than 200 milligrams of caffeine/theine while you are pregnant or breastfeeding. "If you drink 2 cups of black tea and 1 cup of green tea in a day in addition to 1 cup of coffee, you'll get about 140 mg of caffeine," according to the Dutch Nutrition Center.
So you don't have to leave a cup of green or black tea. The advice says that you can enjoy limited green and black teas if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. But what after those few cups of tea?
In general, you can continue to enjoy fruit and herbal teas. This tea does not contain theine (caffeine in tea). However, the Nutrition Center advises not to drink tea with cinnamon, fennel or aniseed during pregnancy and during the breastfeeding period. These herbs contain a plant poison that could be harmful to babies. These poisons are not dangerous for adults and you can still drink these herbs.
